What is Local SEO, and how is it different from regular SEO?

Local SEO (search engine optimisation) is the process of optimising your online presence to attract customers in a specific geographic area. It focuses on improving visibility in local search results, particularly in Google’s Map Pack and location-based searches.

Unlike traditional SEO, which targets broad or national audiences, Local SEO focuses on local traffic and intent, meaning people actively looking for businesses “near me” or in a specific city or suburb. It includes strategies like:

  • Optimising your Google My Business Listing
  • Using geo-targeted keywords
  • Building local citations
  • Managing local reviews and ratings
  • Google Business Posts to udate users on local events, updates and business information

If you rely on customers walking through your door, calling for service, or booking an appointment, Local SEO is essential. When someone searches for a business like yours in their area you want to appear in those top results.

With Local SEO:

To appear on Google Maps, your business must have a verified Google Business Profile. If you don’t have one, we’ll set it up for you. If you do, we’ll optimise it with accurate information, relevant categories, services, opening hours, images, and updates.

Yes,  as long as you serve customers in person, you’re eligible. Service-area businesses like mobile dog groomers, electricians, and plumbers can have a Google Business Profile. Instead of listing a physical address, you simply specify the areas or suburbs you service.

Eligible businesses include:

  • Service-area businesses (e.g. trades, mobile services)
  • Hybrid businesses (those with both a shopfront and on-location service)
  • Home-based businesses that meet with customers face to face

 

That said, not every business qualifies. Ineligible business types include:

  • Virtual offices or PO boxes with no in-person contact
  • Online-only businesses with no local presence
  • Lead generation companies or affiliate models
  • Rental or for-sale property listings (e.g. holiday homes, land for sale)
  • Temporary pop-ups not operating under your business name

Most businesses start seeing measurable improvements within 3 to 6 months, depending on your competition, location, and starting point. If your Google Business Profile is new or your website hasn’t been optimised before, it may take a bit longer to build authority. However, if you already have some visibility, progress can come faster with the right strategy in place.

While both marketing strategies can target local customers, local SEO is an organic strategy focused on improving your visibility in local search results, without paying for each click. It’s long-term, sustainable, and builds trust over time. Google Ads, on the other hand, is a paid strategy. You bid on keywords to appear at the top of search results instantly. You’re charged each time someone clicks your ad.
