What is Transport Layer Security (TLS)?
Transport Layer Security, or TLS, is a protocol that ensures data is securely transmitted over the internet. Whether you are browsing a website, sending an email, or shopping online, TLS encrypts the information being exchanged between your device and the server, protecting it from eavesdropping, tampering and forgery.
It’s an evolution of the older Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol and is characterised by websites with “https://” in their URL.
Note: The use of the terms TLS and SSL are often used interchangeably, but they are technically different. SSL was the original security protocol, but it has been replaced by TLS due to improvements in encryption and security. While many people still refer to “SSL certificates,” when these security certificates are implemented, you are almost always using the TLS protocol.
