What are Google Webmaster Tools?

Google Webmaster Tools (now known as Google Search Console) is a free service provided by Google that helps website owners, webmasters, and SEO professionals monitor and manage their site’s presence in Google search results.

The first iteration of this tool launched in 2005 as Sitemaps, a simple XML tool that helped Google learn more about the contents of websites. Google have continued to add various features and metrics and was renamed to Google Webmaster Tools in 2006 to better reflect the tools goals and purpose.

In 2015, Google rebranded (again!) the service to Google Search Console to highlight its enhanced features and focus on providing more detailed insights into search performance. This update included new functionalities aimed at improving how users can track and optimise their site’s performance in search results.

  • Monitor website performance
  • Watch for indexing errors
  • Submit sitemap and pages
  • Identify security and manual action
