What is UGC Link Attribute? 

Introduced in 2019, after Google changed how the “nofollow” attribute works, the UGC (User-Generated Content) link attribute is a type of rel attribute used in HTML to signal to search engines that a link was created in user-generated content. This includes things like blog comments, forum posts, and any other content that users of a website can contribute to.  

By adding rel=”ugc” to a link, website owners tell search engines like Google that the link may not have been added by the site owner but rather by a user. Despite this, UGC link attributes are not common practice with less than 1% of websites implementing it.  

Is UGC Important for SEO?

UGC link attributes don’t have any significant impact on SEO rankings, however, it does help Google better understand why such links have been added. Additionally, it is good practice as it ensures that your website doesn’t get penalised for external links that look unnatural or spammy. 

Another way to do so is to set these links as “nofollow”
