What is international SEO, and how is it different from regular SEO?

International SEO is the process of optimising your website so it ranks in search results across different countries and languages. While regular SEO typically targets one market (like Australia), international SEO involves technical setup like hreflang tags, region-specific keyword research, content localisation, and building authority in each target market. It’s not just about ranking… it’s about ranking in the right country for the right audience.

The core technical requirements include hreflang tag implementation (so search engines know which version of a page to serve to which audience), choosing the right URL structure (ccTLDs, subdirectories, or subdomains), ensuring each version of your site is crawlable, and setting up geo-targeting in Google Search Console. Get any of these wrong, and search engines won’t know which page to rank where.

We start with data. We look at where your existing website is already getting international traffic, which markets have the highest search demand for your products or services, competitive landscape by region, and your business goals. From there, we prioritise the highest-opportunity markets and build a phased rollout strategy.

Not even close. Translation is just the starting point. True international SEO requires localisation… adapting your content so it resonates culturally, targeting the right keywords (not just translated versions of your Australian terms), and building authority with local backlinks. A page that converts well in English for an Australian audience might completely miss the mark for a German or Japanese audience without proper localisation.

The biggest ones we see are using automatic translation without human review, ignoring hreflang tags (or implementing them incorrectly), assuming Australian keywords will work in other markets, neglecting local link building, and trying to launch in too many countries at once without a clear strategy. Each of these can seriously damage your rankings or waste your budget.
