Google Top Heavy Update

What is Google Top Heavy Update?

The Google Top Heavy Update is an algorithm change that Google introduced to improve the quality of search results. Launched in January 2012, it’s official name was Page layout algorithm improvement. This update specifically targeted websites that had too many ads or distracting elements at the top of their pages (or above the fold).

While it is common for may websites to run ads as a way to generate income, before this update, some websites were filled with so many ads or promotional content at the top that it overshadowed the content users were actually looking for.

Why Is It An Important Update?

Google understands that ads are a part of the web (it even offers tools and services like Google Ads to help businesses reach their audience.) However, the Top Heavy Update penalises sites that overdo it, especially when ads interfere with the user experience. Google always want to provide users with the best possible results, even if it is promoting ads from their own Adsense program.

Criticisms For Google Top Heavy

While an important update, there has been some criticisms – not for the intent of the update, but the fact that Google’s own search results displayed several ads at the top of the page. It was pointed out that these ads obstructed a user’s access to relevant results, just as much as they did on individual pages.

Best Practices to Avoid Top Heavy Penalisations

  • Don’t have too many ads above the fold: Focus on providing balanced layout where your main content is easily visible without excessive scrolling. Prioritise content over ads, ensuring that ads don’t overwhelm the page or push your main content too far down.
  • Make your content easily findable: Ensure your visitors can see and access your content quickly and efficiently. Avoid pop-ups or large banners that obscure the page, and keep your site design clean and user-friendly.
  • Deliver the best user experience: It’s always important to focus on creating a smooth and engaging user experience. This includes fast page loading times, responsive design, and clear navigation. When ads are necessary, integrate them in a way that complements the content rather than disrupts it.
