DNHQ Research · Industry deep-dive · May 2026
The industry that sells search is not insulated from it. Marketing & Creative Services sits in the top half of AI exposure, the citation mix is dominated by community and career platforms, and the sources Google trusts on "best agency" queries are mostly not agency websites. Here's the uncomfortable data, and the plays it suggests.
01 · The headline number
43.1%
of marketing & creative SERPs return an AI Overview
Marketing & Creative Services sits just outside the high-exposure quartile, 5.3 percentage points above the national average. Not as exposed as Accounting or IT, but meaningfully more than Trades, Healthcare, or any of the local-service verticals.
The rate itself isn't the story. Two structural findings are. First, Reddit is the single most cited source on Australian marketing queries, one of only two verticals in our study where a community platform tops the table. Second, Australian domains hold just 39.0% of citations, the second-lowest local share we measured. When Google's AI answers a marketing question, it's usually quoting the global content machine or an anonymous practitioner thread, not an Australian agency.
02 · The intent breakdown
We split every marketing query into one of four intents and measured each separately. Unlike the local-service verticals, there's no clean refuge here: even the least-exposed intent class triggers AI on roughly three in ten searches.
Informational intent at 71.3% means the educational content marketing agencies have built their own funnels on ("what is SEO", "how much should I spend on Google Ads", "email marketing benchmarks") now meets an AI summary on seven in ten searches. The top of the agency funnel is being answered before the click.
Commercial intent at 37.0% comes on the biggest sample in this page (4,362 queries), and it's the number that should worry agency owners most. "Best SEO agency Brisbane", "web design agency vs freelancer", "top social media agencies Australia" trigger an AI-mediated shortlist more than a third of the time.
Navigational at 32.7% is unusually high for a services vertical (most sit under 20%), partly because brand queries in this industry often double as tool queries, and Google treats "mailchimp pricing" or "canva pro" as answerable questions. Transactional reads 31.4% but on only 204 queries, so treat it as directional.
03 · Mobile vs desktop
We split the dataset by device. Marketing follows the dominant service-sector pattern: mobile SERPs carry more AI than desktop, with a gap near the middle of the range we measured.
The +4.0pp gap sits alongside B2B Services (+4.4pp) and IT (+3.5pp), and well under the Legal and Accounting skews (+7.2pp, +7.1pp). Business buyers researching agencies on a phone between meetings see the AI-heavy version of the SERP; the same search back at a desk is slightly cleaner.
Practical implication: when you screenshot SERPs for pitches or reporting (your own or your clients'), lead with mobile. It's both the majority device and the more AI-mediated surface, so it's the honest picture of what prospects actually see.
04 · The citation leaderboard
This leaderboard should be pinned to every agency's wall. Of the roughly 24,500 citations in our marketing sample, the top source is Reddit, the #2 is YouTube, and the first agency-adjacent properties are directories (Clutch, SEMrush's agency list), not agencies themselves.
| # | Domain | Citations | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | reddit.com | 1,301 | 5.3% |
| 2 | youtube.com | 1,074 | 4.4% |
| 3 | au.indeed.com | 645 | 2.6% |
| 4 | google.com | 348 | 1.4% |
| 5 | au.seek.com | 296 | 1.2% |
| 6 | seek.com.au | 255 | 1.0% |
| 7 | linkedin.com | 255 | 1.0% |
| 8 | support.google.com | 247 | 1.0% |
| 9 | glassdoor.com.au | 243 | 1.0% |
| 10 | clutch.co | 233 | 0.9% |
Reddit at #1 (5.3%) is the defining finding. When Australians ask Google whether SEO is worth it, what an agency should cost, or whether an agency is legitimate, the AI reaches for practitioner and client threads, unfiltered and often sceptical. Only Real Estate shows the same Reddit-first pattern. The AI is quoting the community's view of your industry, not the industry's view of itself.
The recruitment cluster (Indeed, both Seek variants, Glassdoor, both LinkedIn variants) takes a combined 7.6% of citations, echoing what we found in B2B: Google blurs "hire a marketing agency" with "work in marketing", and careers content gets quoted on both. Meanwhile clutch.co (233 citations) and agencies.semrush.com (209, just outside the top ten) show that directory listings now function as AIO citation sources on shortlist queries.
Australian domains hold just 39.0% of citations, second-lowest in the study (only Travel & Tourism is lower at 34.1%). Australian agencies compete for citations against HubSpot, Ahrefs, Semrush, Forbes and a decade of global marketing content. In our follow-up citation research, cited marketing domains carried a median Authority Score of 42, with a quarter at 26 or below, so the bar isn't authority. It's Australian specificity: local benchmarks, AUD pricing, and named local context are what the global machine can't supply.
05 · Local intent
Adding a location to a marketing query collapses AI exposure. The insulation effect here is the fourth-largest in our 18-industry dataset, behind only Real Estate, IT, and B2B.
"Marketing agency Sydney", "web designer Sunshine Coast", "SEO services Adelaide" trigger AI at barely a third of the rate of general queries. Google still reads these as find-a-provider searches and defers to the local organic results and map pack.
Translation for your agency: the city-targeted service pages that every agency builds are still the cleanest surface you own. The irony of 2026 is that agencies' educational content (the thought-leadership funnel) is 71% AI-mediated, while the "boring" local landing pages keep working. Local proof, local case studies and local landing pages deserve budget that explainer blogs no longer do.
06 · Page-type safety map
We measured AIO trigger rate by what kind of page ranks #1 in the marketing SERP. The pattern is the industry's own funnel inverted: the higher up the funnel the page sits, the more likely the AI answers instead.
When a blog post or guide ranks #1, an AI Overview appears 79.2% of the time. Agency homepages at 22.7% are the quiet end, in line with Accounting (18.6%) and IT (25.4%).
The large "other / mixed" bucket (3,354 SERPs at 48.7%) reflects how much of this vertical's search surface is tools, templates, platforms and resource pages rather than classic service sites. Product-page SERPs were too rare to read (62 SERPs), so we've excluded them.
Our view: for agencies, the exposed surface is the exact content type most agencies produce as their own marketing. Publishing another "what is content marketing" explainer in 2026 is donating labour to Google's AI. The content that still earns clicks is the content the AI can't reproduce: proprietary data, named client results, priced offers, and opinions with an author.
