Google Dance

What is Google Dance?

Google Dance is a term used to describe the period of fluctuation and changes in search engine rankings that can occur when Google updates its algorithms or indexing systems. It is also common when new content is added or updates on the site.

Why Does This Happen?

The Google Dance was most common in the early 2000s when Google would only release updates monthly. This would result in websites rapidly losing and gaining traffic within a relatively short period.

However, as Google has updated their systems and technologies, this phenomenon has become less common. Google also now releases daily updates also reducing the severity of volatility in the SERPs (search engine results pages)

Google does release major algorithm updates several times a year that does cause fluctuations and volatility, these are not considered Google Dances.

Google Dance for New Sites

Google Dance can still be common for new sites that are just beginning to rank in the search results. This is used as an indicator of Google’s interest in gathering data about the site, assesses it’s quality and understands how to rank it against similar content. This type of volatility does disappear after a while and the site will likely not experience it again.
