Automotive is one of the least AI-exposed industries we measured, until you look at how-to queries. The data splits the vertical cleanly in half: research and diagnosis belong to the AI, while booking, buying and brand searches remain some of the cleanest SERPs left in Australia. Where the citations go is its own story.
01 · The headline number

of automotive SERPs return an AI Overview
Automotive sits near the bottom of the exposure league, 12.5 percentage points below the national average and ahead of only Events & Weddings, Beauty, and Hospitality. If you run a workshop, a dealership, or a parts business, most of your search surface still looks like classic Google.
But the vertical-level average is close to meaningless here, because automotive has the second-widest intent split in the entire dataset. Informational queries trigger AI Overviews at 73.9%, while commercial queries sit at 24.4%, a 49.5-point spread that only Real Estate matches. Google's AI has effectively taken over the "what's wrong with my car" half of the market and left the "who should fix it" half alone.
02 · The intent breakdown
We split every automotive query into one of four intents (informational, commercial, transactional, navigational) and measured each separately. No other vertical we tested shows a cleaner two-speed pattern.
Informational intent at 73.9% is where the disruption lives. "Why is my car overheating", "what does the engine light mean", "how often should I service my car". The diagnostic questions that used to bring readers to workshop blogs and forum threads now meet an AI answer on roughly three of every four searches.
Commercial (24.4%) and transactional (25.5%) intent are largely insulated. Comparison and purchase queries like "best tyres for a Ranger", "mobile mechanic cost", "book a car service" trigger AI at a third of the informational rate. On 2,465 commercial and 1,131 transactional queries, these are solid samples, not noise.
Navigational intent at 7.6% is the third-cleanest in the study, and it comes on a large sample (2,079 queries). Brand searches for parts retailers, service chains and dealerships are essentially AI-free. Only Beauty (3.7%) and Hospitality (4.4%) run cleaner.
03 · Mobile vs desktop
Across most service verticals, mobile SERPs carry meaningfully more AI than desktop (Legal +7.2pp, Accounting +7.1pp). Automotive is one of the flattest device splits we measured.
The gap is within the margin of error, so treat mobile and desktop as the same surface in automotive. Only Beauty (−0.6pp) and E-commerce (−1.8pp) flip desktop-heavy, while Events & Weddings (+0.8pp) and Real Estate (+1.0pp) sit in the same near-zero band as automotive.
Practical implication: device split isn't a reporting trap in this vertical. Whatever AIO exposure your keywords have, it will look roughly the same on a phone in the driveway and a desktop at the office. Audit once, on either device, and spend the saved effort on the intent split above, which is where the real variance is.
04 · The citation leaderboard
When Google's AI writes an automotive answer, the single domain it cites most is google.com, at 9.0% of all citations in our sample of 13,537. That's one of the heaviest self-citation rates in the study: Maps listings, Google support pages and shopping surfaces feeding the AI's answers about local car services.

Below Google, the leaderboard belongs to national service chains and booking marketplaces. mycar (4.8%), AutoGuru (3.4%), Supercheap Auto (2.3%) and JAX Tyres (1.0%) are all businesses that publish extensive service explainers, pricing guides and DIY content at scale. When the AI answers "how much does a brake pad replacement cost", it's their content doing the work.
Australian domains hold 66.8% of automotive citations, well above the dataset midpoint of 54.9%. Unlike Marketing or IT, local content isn't fighting a global publishing machine here. The competition for the citation slot is domestic, which means it's winnable.
The authority bar is low too. In our follow-up citation research, cited automotive domains had a median Authority Score of just 39, and a quarter sat at 24 or below. Combined with the AU-heavy citation mix, an independent workshop with genuinely useful diagnostic content can get quoted alongside the chains. This is one of the more open citation markets in the study.
05 · Local intent
Across our 18-industry dataset, adding a location to a query suppresses AI Overviews in 17 verticals. In automotive, the suppression takes an already-low trigger rate to single digits.
At 9.9%, only Beauty & Personal Care sees less AI on local queries than automotive. "Mechanic near me", "car service Parramatta", "tyre shop Geelong" produce a classic SERP nine times out of ten: map pack, organic listings, ads, no AI summary in the way.
This matters because local is where automotive revenue actually lives. Nobody books a brake job in another city. The map pack remains the primary battlefield, and in our Map Pack study, mechanics in Adelaide had the lowest entry cost of all 108 industry-city packs we measured, with pack members holding as few as 12 reviews at the 25th percentile. The local surface is both clean of AI and, in several metros, cheap to enter.
Translation for your business: Google Business Profile, reviews, and suburb-level service pages are still the highest-leverage SEO work in this vertical, and nothing in the AI shift changes that. If anything, the AI takeover of generic how-to queries makes the local surface relatively more valuable.
06 · Page-type safety map
We measured AIO trigger rate by what kind of page ranks #1 in the automotive SERP. The spread between the safest and most exposed surface is 73 percentage points, one of the widest page-type ranges in the study.
When an automotive homepage ranks #1, an AI Overview appears just 7.7% of the time, the third-safest homepage rate in the dataset (only Beauty at 4.6% and Hospitality at 5.0% are lower). Location pages (26.8%) and directories (17.5%) are similarly quiet.
Blog content flips to 80.8%. The moment the top result is an article ("signs your alternator is dying", "EOFY car service checklist"), the AI almost always steps in above it. The n here is smaller (239 SERPs), but the pattern matches every other vertical we measured.
Our view: automotive rewards a barbell content strategy. Money pages (homepage, location, service) hold a genuinely clean surface, so keep them conversion-focused and locally targeted. Editorial content, by contrast, is now citation bait rather than a traffic channel, and should be written and structured accordingly.
