An inbound link, also known as a backlink, or external link, is a link from one website that directs users to your website.

  • Focus on authoritative pages & websites: The key is quality over quantity! When building an inbound link profile, the authority of a website is essential. Put simply, authority is determined by how many external links are pointing to it. Think of these links as votes of confidence, that demonstrate the credibility of a website.  
  • Ensure they are relevant: It’s no use having inbound links from unrelated or irrelevant sites. For an inbound link to be truly beneficial, it should come from a website that is relevant to your industry or niche. For example, if you run a trave blog, its best to have inbound links from other prominent travel sites.  
  • Don’t over-optimise anchor text: Anchor text is clickable text that links to another page. It tells both users and search engines what the linked page is about. However, keep it natural! Avoid over-optimizing anchor text with exact-match keywords, as this can appear spammy. 
  • Avoid Black-hat techniques: While black-hat techniques might offer quick wins and immediate results, they are considered manipulative and risky. Buying links or using link farms, can lead to penalties from search engines and damage your site’s reputation. Focus on naturally building your inbound link profile to ensure long-term success.  

How Many Inbound Links Do You Need To Rank?

Simply – it depends! When it comes to ranking well in search engines, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer for how many inbound links you need. They are often based on factors such as: 

  • In highly competitive industries, websites might need a more high-quality inbound links to stand out.  
  • It’s not just about the number of links but the quality. A few authoritative and relevant links from well-respected sites are more valuable than many low-quality links.  
  • If your content relevant and provides real value, it can naturally attract more inbound links.  
  • If your site already has a strong backlink profile, you might need fewer additional links to boost your rankings. However, if you’re just starting out, you may need to focus more on building a diverse and robust link profile.
