Backlinks

Backlinks are from one page on a website to another external source. Search engines like Google prioritise and analyse this to estimate how authoritative a website is.

What Are Backlinks?

Backlinks, or also known as inbound links, are links to a specific web page or a resource from an external website. Backlinks are incoming links (as they link back to you). Links going out to a page (external links) are known as outgoing links. However, the outgoing link from your website is classed as a backlink to the external webpage you are linking to…bit of a brain twister.

What Is Classed as a ‘Good’ Backlink?

‘Good’ backlinks should be relevant to your website’s subject matter, as well as authoritative. Meaning the external website itself has a substantial amount of relevant backlinks linking to itself and is seen as an authoritative source of information in Google’s eyes. Another key factor is the anchor text that is used on the external website that links to yours.

Google has openly stated that content and the quality and relevancy of links pointed towards a website is a strong and core ranking factor.

Moreover, the process of increasing the number and quality of backlinks on a website or specific webpage is called ‘link-building’.
