Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)

What are Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)?

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) is an open-source HTML framework created by Google. It was initially developed as a competitor to Facebook’s instant articles and Apple News, both of which allow users to experience content that is easy to digest and fast to load.

Originally designed for new publishers but has subsequently expanded into delivering landing pages and web pages alike, AMP is designed to provide fast, reliable web experiences optimised for mobile devices.

Does AMP help SEO?

As of 2024, AMP, as Google has stated, is not itself a ranking factor for Google Search.

However, speed is a ranking factor in SEO – Google Search applies the same standards to all pages within SERPs regardless of the technology being leveraged (AMP or not).

What are the benefits of Google AMP?

Aside from the mentioned faster loading times, there are a few additional benefits that AMP can offer;

Increased web engagement: AMP provide a lightweight code allowing for users with an unstable connection or slower connection speed to still access the page. This along with the page load time reduction can improve ones user experience, therefore increasing the chance of a user staying on your page for longer.

Increase ad views: AMPs HTML is developed in a way to improve the usability of imagery and banner advertisement – This increases ad viewability rates and can subsequently increase monetization potenttal for websites.

Increased click-through rates: AMPs are often displayed within the “top stories list” in mobile SERPs. This appears on top of all other search results and, therefore, increases clickthrough rates from SERPs overall.
