SEO Silo

What is An SEO Silo?

An SEO Silo is a type of website architecture where a website’s pages are grouped, isolated and interlinked by a specific topic. This can create clear, distinct sections of related content.

How Does Siloing Work?

The idea behind SEO silos is that a related group of pages can benefit from internal links from other topically related content.

Let’s look at an example:

You start with broad topics or categories (the “silos” pages) and then create specific subtopics or related articles that fall under each category. So, if you run a gardening website, your main silos could be “Vegetable Gardening,” “Flower Gardening,” and “Garden Maintenance.” Under the “Vegetable Gardening” silo, you could have subtopics like “Growing Tomatoes,” “Best Soil for Vegetables,” and “Organic Pest Control” that link to one another.  This means that any content related to flowers or garden maintenance will fall under and be linked from their respective silo pages.

While the traditional silo structure suggests keeping links contained within their respective categories, some SEOs argue that strategically linking between silos can help distribute authority and drive traffic to related content. Sticking to a silo structure means that if pages have relevant linking opportunities across topics, you may miss out on those potential connections that could enhance the user experience and provide additional context.
